I am completely in love with this series! It’s a bit edgy and cute at times, but it does not distract you from the fact that these teens are being lured into a word far too dangerous. It’s a mix of reality and the bitter truth regarding what we choose to see and believe. Each character deals with their own problems and we see how that influences where they are and why they make these choices. It’s honestly a work of art regardless of its dark matter. Please give this one a go and be your own critic.

Chiara(Benedetta Porcaroli) is a teenage girl living in Italy, Rome. She seems to have a perfect life, like everyone in her circle. She attends an elite school where everyone comes from money. Chiara appears to live a boring life until she befriends Ludovica(Alice Pagani). However, their friendship is complicated as rumors surround Ludovica. Around the same time, Damiano( Riccardo Mandolini) is transferred to their school. The three teens begin to experience a life far too dark and deep into the depths of nightlife, prostitution, and drug dealing.

There are currently two seasons. I will be focusing on the first season of Baby. If you’re into Skins (Uk), Slide (AU), or Hormones (TH), this is the show for you! Or if you’re itching for teenage angst nostalgia or want to escape your current life problems, this 6 episode series is highly recommended for you.

Side note: I am in love with the soundtracks and cinematography

Why it’s so Good:
Baby(2018) is one of those series that sticks out. It deals with troubled youth steaming from familial problems and societal norms. It has a strong focus on the beautiful and sad aspects of learning who you are and what your limits can be as you go through the ups and downs of life. I especially enjoy how they represent loneliness, distortion, and danger through visuals, sounds, and filming angles. It does an excellent job of capturing emotions through cinematography, and very rarely does a series or film convey that to the audience.

What I love:
I love that this show does not discredit the teens feeling. They are not made to be seen as crazy just because they are young. They are almost conditioned into the situation they are being presented. These teens are deeply trying to escape their reality by entering a world they believe gives them control and freedom. Without realizing how deep and dark and out of control, it’s truly becoming. They are never in control even if they believe they are.

I also love how this show did not shy away from sexual relations, social media, and underage partying. It’s not a crucified action on behalf of the teens. But rather it’s understood for what it is, a normal occurrence. This show also does not glorify everything the teens do; there are repercussions and sometimes no justice.

My favorite Characters:
I personally love Ludovica’s character. She’s misunderstood as a bad problem child. But in reality, she just lacks a stable life with a parental figure. She becomes financially burdened with her school fees. As a result, she is lead to a life of prostitution, where she also finds comfort and an unlikely friendship with Chiara. I love that she says exactly what she wants, isn’t afraid to show her emotions, and, most of all, she’s a supportive friend. Her methods and life choices may not be the best, but she’s a great character overall.

My second favorite character is Niccolo (Lorenzo Zurzolo). What can I say, he has the best bad boy image that I’ve seen that screams real-life teenage boy. He does such a great job of portraying his character. He’s messed up and utterly insane. You can see the lust, anger, and jealousy pour out of his facial expressions. He does a great job of pissing me off.

Why this series is controversial:
There is a problem due to the prostitution aspect of this drama since it involves teenagers in the storyline. However, this story is loosely based on the real-life case of two girls who were engaged in prostitution. It’s clearly wrong, and that’s why the series portrays it as it is, Chiara and Ludovica are innocently playing with fire without overthinking about the consequences of their actions. In real life, a lot of the things teenagers do can be dangerous, but no one thinks of it like that at the moment. Until later on, does on realize how naive and immature our actions are as we grow older and experience life. I think the series tried its best to portray the life of teenager right now the best it can. It’s not to say everyone does what is portrayed in the show. It’s just the social environment the teens are thrown into, which leads to their downfalls, discoveries, and otherwise controversial life choices. They are often exploited, manipulated, and used by everyone around them.

Let me know what your thoughts and opinions are regarding this genre. Do you think this series is controversial? Have you watched Baby(2018)? Season two is available as of Oct. 18 2019.
